The Department Store: History · Design · Display [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 25.82 $Where, under one roof, can shoppers find Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Prada, Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen? And where, besides the great department stores of Europe, Japan and America, is it possible for shoppers to spend the day in an extraordinarily opulent setting, drifting from shoes to cosmetics with a stop for a light lunch on the seventh floor and a visit to the bookstore, florist or hairdresser? This is the first illustrated book on department stores, with photographs and ephemera collected from all over the world. Born in the Gilded Age in France, the department store grew up thanks to the Industrial Revolution, the rise of the middle classes, and the invention of steel-frame architecture and the elevator. This lavish book goes behind the fabulous window displays, eye-catching shopping bags and instore extravaganzas promoting everything from shoes to perfumes to the latest fashion sensation to reveal and celebrate the department store in richness and detail.

Malls and Department Stores
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 32.12 $Retail trade has recognized the opportunity of qualification and individualization through high-grade buildings. For a long time commercial architecture was linked exclusively to the city center: markets, passages and, starting in the 20th century, Department stores. In the postwar period, shopping malls made their appearance at the urban periphery, introducing new approaches that included space for leisure activities and gastronomic amenities. In the next step self-contained mega-malls sprouted in the open countryside, making shopping facilities completely autonomous from urban structures. The richly illustrated volume, provided with detailed planning material, shows the latest tendencies in shopping architecture worldwide as seen in 101 projects in the cities, the periphery and outside.

The American Department Store Transformed, 1920-1960
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 102.83 $After attaining classic stature with palaces erected in the early 20th century, the American department store continued to evolve in ways that were influenced by changes in business practices, shopping patterns, design approaches, and urban structure. This masterful and innovative history of a celebrated building type focuses on many of the nation’s greatest retail companies—Marshall Fields, Lord and Taylor, Gimbel’s, Wanamaker’s, and Bullock’s, among others—and the role they played in defining America’s cities. Author Richard Longstreth traces the development and evolution of department stores from local, urban institutions to suburban entities in the nation’s sixty largest cities, showing how the stores underwent changes to adapt to dramatic economic and urban developments, including the decentralization from metropolitan areas, increased popularity of the automobile, and challenges from retail competitors on a national level. Extensively illustrated, this fascinating book offers a fundamental understanding of the transformation of Main Streets nationwide.

Malls & Department Stores (Architecture in Focus)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 49.99 $At the beginning of the 20th century, the department store developed from markets and urban arcades, from which the shopping mall evolved in the post-war period. The operators of department stores and shopping centers are coming under increasing pressure from the competition of the continuously growing internet trade. By the same token, however, there is also an increasing tendency for the internet trade to become involved with real shops. The challenge is to optimize the quality of the customer’s stay. This is accomplished by the interspersing of the offer by cultural institutions, a variety of dining opportunities and exciting leisure activities. The time spent in a department store or a shopping center must be conceived as an experience, separate from the consumption of goods, which engages all the senses. Which is where architectural quality as well as a targeted design can play an increasingly important role.

Thalhimers Department Stores (Images of America)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 26.95 $Thalhimers was founded in Richmond in 1842 by German Jewish immigrant William Thalhimer as a humble dry goods store. It expanded over the years to become a 26-store chain across the Southeast under the leadership of William’s great-grandson, William B. Thalhimer Jr. It boasted the latest in clothing, shoes, and accessories for the entire family, the most modern of housewares, and gourmet foods and baked goods, including the iconic six-layer chocolate cake. Through decades of dramatic political and social change, Thalhimers stood strong, guided by the overarching philosophies of honesty, integrity, quality, and service. Loyal and devoted employees were the heart of Thalhimers, becoming part of the extended Thalhimer family. Sadly, in 1992, as a result of retail consolidation, the Thalhimer name was dropped and the flagship downtown Richmond store closed. A 150-year legacy ended, leaving behind cherished memories, stories, and images.

Emporium Department Store (Paperback)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 26.49 $The Emporium--"California's Largest, America's Grandest Store"--was a major shopping destination on San Francisco's Market Street for a century, from 1896 to 1996. Shoppers flocked to the mid-price store with its beautiful dome and bandstand. Patrons could find anything at the Emporium, from jewelry to stoves, and it was a meeting place for friends to enjoy tea while listening to the Emporium Orchestra. Founded as the Emporium and Golden Rule Bazaar, the store flourished until the disastrous 1906 earthquake. Once it reopened in 1908, it dominated shopping downtown until mid-century. Many San Franciscans remember with great nostalgia the Christmas Carnival on the roof, complete with slides, a skating rink, and a train. Santa always arrived in grand style with a big parade down Market Street. After World War II, the Emporium, which had merged with H.C. Capwell & Co. in the late 1920s, began its push and opened branch stores throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. However, as competition increased, the company's financial situation worsened, and the Emporium name was no more in 1996.

Cleveland's Department Stores
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 41.94 $Originating as simple one- or two-room storefront operations, Cleveland's department stores grew as population and industry in the region boomed throughout the late 19th century and the first half of the 20th. They moved into ever larger and elaborate structures in an attempt to woo the shopping dollars of blue-collar and genteel Clevelanders alike. Stores such as Halle's, Higbee's, May Company, Bailey Company, Sterling-Lindner-Davis, and others both competed with and complemented one another, all the while leaving an indelible mark on the culture of northeast Ohio and beyond. From the humble origins of Halle's horse-drawn delivery wagons and the elaborate design of Higbee's on Public Square to Christmas favorites like Mr. Jingeling and the massive Christmas tree at Sterling-Lindner-Davis--it is all here in crisp, black-and-white images, many of which have not been seen in print for decades.
